What's Your IAQ?

THE EPA RANKS INDOOR AIR POLUTION AMONG THE NATION’S TOP 5 ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS.    Indoor pollutants range from occasionally visible particles of dust, pollen, and smoke, to fumes from carpet adhesives and upholstery.   Dust mites, dirt and fibers thrive in plush carpets, overstuffed upholstery, cushy bed comforters, and billowy drapes.  Indoor air levels of many air pollutants may be 2-5 times higher than outdoor levels.    Family members could be waking up every morning with sinus problems that tend to fade by the afternoon when they’re at school or work.  As houses are built “tight” to conserve energy and seal out drafts, too little outdoor air enters the home and pollutants can accumulate to high levels. The ventilation system installed to increase occupant comfort is often recirculating stale contaminated air throughout that “tight” house.  The end result is that the number of allergy sufferers has doubled to 115 million in the last 10 years.

Allergy and asthma suffers are encouraged to change their environment rather than depend solely on medicine for physical relief.  Those who suffer from allergies, but aren’t seeking treatments can also learn that there are simple ways to make themselves feel better.  Utilizing special bed linens and air cleaning systems, installing blinds instead of drapes, maintaining regularly scheduled carpet, upholstery and ventilation duct cleaning are all easily obtainable choices to maintaining a comfortable and healthy home.

Upgrading air filtration in the home is highly recommended by industry professionals.  Filtration upgrade options range from cut-to-fit vent and air conditioning filters, the simple exchange of a permanent/washable electrostatic air filter instead of an inefficient throwaway, the use of odor/fume adsorbing activated carbon filters, to specially installed electronic air cleaners.

Awareness of the side effects of poor indoor air quality continues to increase.  A recent consumer study (by the Chelsea Group) concluded that 60% of people surveyed with children living at home said they’d purchase products/services to improve the IAQ in their homes, and 80% of those surveyed believe that their home IAQ is very important.  Indoor air quality solution have become a billion dollar market.  This market has generated a number of opportunities to assist homeowners in alleviating the results of poor indoor air quality.  As a cleaning service professional your recommendations are important.
